South Carolina Walk to School Day

Wednesday, March 7

Due to outstanding participation on International Walk to School Day held each October, South Carolina Safe Routes to School has decided to take it one step further with our very own day. This Wednesday, schools across the state are encouraging students to walk to and/or from school. Each school is in charge of setting up its own safety program for this initiative and is encouraged to educate participants on the benefits of walking and biking:

  • enhanced health from increased physical activity
  • improved air quality due to reduced automobile emissions in your school zone
  • safer streets due to less traffic congestion

Many schools have set up “park and walk” programs where students can gather at an off-site location near campus and walk the remainder of the way together. We encourage you to ask your student or call their school to find out how you can participate. The Post and Courier has also shared some important reasons why your kids should walk this Wednesday.
