Our goal is to reduce the environmental impact of our campus by advancing energy efficiency, water conservation and encouraging recycling. Last year, MUSC recycled 27% of total solid waste.

Guiding departments and units to reduce waste and helping them to conserve resources is our mission while we continue to increase the proportion of waste that is recycled.

Are the “styrofoam” cups sold in the cafeteria recylable? They have a #6 recycling number on them so I assumed they were and I put them in the blue recycling bins when I use them. If they are, an idea might be to push recycling of these items as most of them get “trashed”. 🙂

    • Tracy, good point! Charleston County who picks up our recyclables (plastic glass and steel)will take #1-#7 but they have two exceptions: Styrofoam and plastic wrap. These plastics are very bulky and as you know it is very expensive to haul huge volumes of light plastics; so until we get a local processor we will not be able to collect Styrofoam and plastic wrap!
